While we were in Washington I got to stay with Stephanie at her place with her new cat, Foogie. It was fun to spend time with my sister and have a real cup of coffee in the morning. The rest of the family then would show up at Steph’s and we would go and do the Washington stuff.
The first day though the four of us (Mom,Dad,Chris, and I) took a bus tour where we stopped at all the main monuments. That day we saw the Washington Monument up close, the Jefferson memorial, Lincoln memorial, FDR memorial, and Robert Luther Kink Jr. Memorial. We did all these on an open top bus. It was cool to sit on the top of a double decker bus but the down side was you had to look out for tree branches every once in a while or you got smacked in the head! But we got to know really cool things. Such as the statue of General Grant out side of the Capitol, Grants eyes are directly aligned to look at Lincoln Memorial. So Grant is looking at his commander and chief.
But one of my favorite things we did was walking into the room where Lincoln died. It was truly wonderful. they did not have the actual bed where he died but we were in the room. Right across the street was Fords Theater. We could not go in because they were playing “Hello Dolly” on the stage. I was greatly saddened by this. If you have not heard, Christopher and I read “Lincolns Last Days” before we left and Mom is reading “Killing Lincoln” out loud to us on the road. So I feel I have a strong connection with Lincoln and his story. So I was very disappointed to hear we could not go in.
